Related program: Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami Rebuilding
Founded in 1948, Oikawa Denki manufactures and repairs electric systems for fishing boats in the Ishinomaki area. With their well-established presence and 15 highly skilled employees - many with several decades of experience, they play an important role for the fishing industry, the main industry in the city of Ishinomaki.
Oikawa Denki lost their workshop and equipment in the tsunami, but was able to quickly resume operations at a leased warehouse only a few months following the disaster. The main driver for this rapid recovery in operations was its 15 employees. Many companies in the area were forced to lay off their workers after the tsunami due to loss of property and business opportunities. However, employees at Oikawa Denki took initiative in finding ways to solve the many challenges encountered in innovative ways, and were able to work together to get back on their feet. With this strong team, they have been able to steadily work towards recovery.
